The ABCs of the DLC
Libraries which have not yet hosted the DLC may be most comfortable using Package C or D. We'll do all of the work to make the event successful. Once we've got the ball rolling, your library staff can take over with Package A or B. It should be easy to grow the event into an even bigger campus sensation as we'll have already sparked interest on campus and connected with dozens of students.

How it works...
Libraries host the event for students. It is usually 90 minutes long. Participants pre-register on our website. Students compete in the library either with library computers or their own laptops. They log in to our web-based contest and then complete a customizable survey before the contest begins.
Answers are in free response format -- the DLC is not multiple choice. Correct answers are worth between 1 - 5 points depending upon difficulty. Incorrect answers are penalized and the highest score wins.
Our off-site staff grade these free response answers in real time and we announce the winners shortly after the contest ends. Following the contest is a discussion about digital literacy and upcoming events at your library.
The Digital Literacy Contest is a competition primarily for individuals, but teams can compete against one another for more fun. For example, students submit the following information when they register:
- Area of concentration
- Year of study
- Gender
During the contest participants see the average score of the winning ‘team’ in each category. For example, they may see that women, juniors, and sociology majors are in the lead on average. The DLC toolbar at the bottom of the screen refreshes as new ‘teams’ take the lead.

The students...
Our evaluations prove students love this contest and want to invite friends to future events. What’s more, libraries which host the event engage students who are not touched by other library outreach.
Past hosts...
Over the past year we helped university libraries host over a dozen highly successful contests. Librarians have said great things about the contest and us. You may have even attended the poster session at ACRL this year where Brown University discussed their positive experience with the Digital Literacy Contest.
We are proud to say we have a maintained 100% satisfaction in our contest and services.
